Alliant Techsystems, the largest supplier of small-caliber ammunition to the United States military, has received an additional $284 million in orders for the production of small-caliber ammunition. In addition, the company has received $46 million for plant modernization. These contracts were issued by the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, Rock Island, Ill.
ATK operates the U.S. Army's Lake City ammunition plant in Independence, Mo., where it produces a mix of 5.56-millimeter, 7.62-millimeter, .50-caliber and 20-millimeter cartridges. ATK currently produces 1.4 billion rounds of small caliber ammunition per year at the plant, with capability to provide up to 1.6 billion rounds should that capacity be needed.
"ATK's top priority at Lake City is to make sure that the men and women of the United States armed forces have the ammunition they need to continue to defend this nation and its allies," said Mark DeYoung, president ATK Ammunition Systems Group. "ATK's modernization and capacity improvement initiatives will ensure that those needs are met for decades to come."
ATK is a $3.4 billion advanced weapon and space systems company employing approximately 15,000 people in 21 states.
