Akasol to Open New Production Facility in Michigan

Noria news wires

Akasol recently announced plans to open its first North American production facility in the metro Detroit area of Michigan. The project, which is expected to create more than 200 jobs in the next five years, comes in response to demand for Akasol’s high-energy battery modules.

The new facility will have a similar capacity to Akasol’s current production site in Langen, Germany. Initial production, which is scheduled to begin in 2020, will focus on the second-generation AKASystem OEM PRC battery system, with high-energy battery systems following soon thereafter. By 2021, Akasol expects production to increase to 400 megawatt hours in a three-shift operation.

“Not only will our new North American production facility enable us to meet the high demand we’re receiving from our global customers, particularly a well-known Swedish manufacturer of trucks and buses, but it is also a core part of our international growth plans,” said Sven Schulz, CEO of Akasol. “Our new Michigan site will accelerate our business-development activities with both new and existing North American customers.”

Based in Germany with nearly 30 years’ experience in battery systems technology, Akasol develops and manufactures high-performance lithium-ion battery systems for buses, commercial vehicles, trains, industrial vehicles and the marine sector. The company employs 180 people across its two sites in Darmstadt and Langen, and will start construction of its expanded headquarters in Darmstadt in July 2019.
