The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently cited Lamm's Machine Inc., a machine manufacturing company headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania, for exposing employees to dangerous chemical hazards. The company faces proposed penalties totaling $14,782.

OSHA responded to complaints on Aug. 30, 2017, and found that employees had been exposed to hazardous chemical vapors from a degreasing operation in an enclosed space. The employer was cited for failing to develop a respiratory protection program, use effective ventilation systems and respirators, ensure proper use of compressed air for cleaning purposes, provide proper hand protection, and evaluate the workplace to determine if there was a need for respirators.

"Employers must monitor their facilities to ensure workplace health and safety procedures are adequate and effective," said Jean Kulp, OSHA's area office director in Allentown. "Exposure to these types of hazardous chemical vapors can lead to serious illnesses and health issues."

The company has 15 business days from the receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA's area director or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
