NSC represented on National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety & Health

National Safety Council

The National Safety Council is proud to announce that James Johnson, group vice president of workplace safety initiatives, has been appointed by Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis to serve a two-year term on the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety & Health. Johnson is one of five new members to the 12-person advisory committee, chosen for his experience and knowledge in occupational safety and health.

NACOSH, established under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, provides recommendations and advises the secretaries of labor and health and human services on occupational safety and health programs and policies. The secretaries may consult with NACOSH on priorities such as leadership, enforcement, compliance, research and expanded partnerships. The secretaries also may reach out to NACOSH for insight on emerging issues in safety and health that OSHA and HHS might choose to pursue.

“The new NACOSH members possess a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience on a wide range of worker health and safety matters,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. Johnson will be one of two members representing management. “I am honored to be selected and to have the opportunity to contribute with the other distinguished members on the committee,” Johnson said.

Prior to joining the Council in August 2009, Johnson had more than 30 years of experience as a safety and health consultant, project manager and team manager, leading the development and delivery of progressive safety solutions for companies of all sizes and in all industries. Johnson previously managed operations and multiple risk control disciplines at companies including Liberty Mutual Group, Johnson & Higgins and Marsh.

Johnson holds a bachelor of science degree from Stanford University. A past member of the NSC board of directors, he also is a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and past president of its Boston Chapter.

The National Safety Council (www.nsc.org) saves lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the roads through leadership, research, education and advocacy.
