The CAPS Research Board of Trustees recently elected a leading supply management professional from the pharmaceutical industry, James Ward, to serve as a Trustee. Ward is vice president and chief procurement officer for Eli Lilly and Company, and is responsible for global procurement at Lilly. He manages an annual spend of US$8 billion for manufacturing, research & development, sales & marketing, and general & administration. Ward also serves as a member of the company’s senior management council.
Eli Lilly and Company has a heritage more than 130 years strong. Global employees’ number approximately 40,000 and medicines are marketed in 143 countries. Lilly has major research and development facilities in eight countries, more than 7,000 employees engaged in research and development, and conducts clinical trials in more than 50 countries.
CAPS Research is a globally recognized supply management research organization affiliated with the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, and the Institute for Supply Management (ISM). The board of trustees is responsible for setting overall operating policies and procedures, and establishing key research programs.
Ward joined Lilly in 1988 as a treasury analyst. He held various assignments in U.S. Pharmaceuticals and human resources before being promoted in 1991 to manufacturing financial manager. In 1993, he moved to Puerto Rico to become financial director of the manufacturing sites. In 1995, he became controller for the Europe, Mideast and Africa region. In 1997, Ward became financial director for Lilly Research Laboratories clinical operations, regulatory, late-phase development, and later added the newly formed product team organization as well. In 1999, he was promoted to executive director and chief financial officer for European Operations and was based in London until 2004.
