Celanese Corporation, a leading, global chemical company, on May 21 announced that its emulsion polymers business, Celanese Emulsions, and its Boucherville, Canada, manufacturing facility, recently received the highest recognition for large enterprises in the CSST (Québec Health and Safety Commission) Québec provincial “Innovation Award” competition. The award honors initiatives focused on both safety and accident prevention.

“Safety is a cultural cornerstone and a core value of Celanese,” said Jim Alder, senior vice president for operations and technical. “Celanese’s emphasis on scientific design, high-efficiency management, system standardization, promotion of best practices and processes, comprehensive training, and high-levels of employee participation has enabled the company to rank within the top 10 percent of all chemical industry manufacturers in terms of safety.”

The award-winning project at the Celanese Boucherville, Canada, site was for a new, automated cleaning system for a large emulsions reactor. The project took more than two years to complete and was designed to eliminate confined space entry, thus reducing the risk of potential injury from high-pressure water washing. The project also decreased the cleaning time of the reactor, thereby dramatically increasing reactor and workplace productivity.

Alder continued: “We are pleased to be recognized by organizations outside the chemical industry for our safety, prevention and innovation efforts. In addition to Celanese’s unrelenting pursuit of safety during production, we adopt the highest of standards with respect to operations, employee training, customer service and community work. Safety must become a prerequisite for the financial success in a company. Our emphasis on safety is part of our commitment to society as a global chemical enterprise, as well as a means of sustainable development.

“We recognize and greatly appreciate the diligent efforts of our employees in the Celanese Boucherville facility, as well as the leadership of the site, for their commitment to process safety in the enterprise and its active role in daily operations,” said Alder.
