Nissan pushing to improve quality control at R&D stage

RP news wires, Noria Corporation

The Japanese newspaper Nikkei reports that Nissan will seek to improve its quality control by opening research and development (R&D) centers around the world.

The newspaper reported that Nissan had assigned approximately 300 staff to work at a technical center in Atsugi located in Kanagawa Prefecture (Japan), in a new unit called the Field Quality Center. Similar measures have been taken at the corporation's Michigan (United States) R&D facility; its plant in Smyrna, Tenn. (United States); and at its European technical center located in the United Kingdom.

The report stated that Nissan hoped to increase the number of possible problems it detected in the design phase, and that the automobile maker would be working together with its component suppliers to ensure greater longevity for its products.

With vehicles and technology being developed in an increasingly rapid fashion, design flaws can be missed in the testing phase, and may only come to light when exposed to the customer. With this program, Nissan will attempt to reduce the possibility of this occurring, and also decrease the number of recall notices that are made.

In the past year, Nissan has had to recall a large number of vehicles, including 113,000 Serena models and 1 million March and Cube models in its home market, 130,000 Murano and X-Trail sports-utility vehicles (SUV's), and 100,000 Altima and Sentras sold in the United States.
