Dow Chemical has signed the letter of intent with Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Chemical Company Limited and Shanghai Tianyuan Group Huasheng Chemical Company Limited. The two Chinese companies will provide materials for Dow Chemical’s new plants.
One plant, with an annual production capacity of 15,000 tons of epichlorohydrin from glycerin, is scheduled to go into operation in 2009. The other plant will be able to produce 1,000 tons of epoxide resin a year and will be operational in 2010.
The Shanghai Industrial Zone is located on the Hangzhou Bay in east China. It is 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Shanghai proper.
Now for the first time in the world, the technique of producing epichlorohydrin from glycerin is used in mass production. Dow Chemical owns the patent of the technique and has set up a model production line at the Stade, Germany plant last year. The patented technique has proven successful and energy efficient.
The global chemical giant also has an epoxide resin plant in Zhangjiagang, a Yangtze River port city in nearby Jiangsu Province, of which the annual production capacity is 41,000 tons.
In 2006, Dow reported record sales of $49 billion, the second highest earnings in the company’s history, according to the company’s website.
