Molson Coors recognized as leader in environmental stewardship

RP news wires

Molson Coors Brewing Company has been recognized in two recent reports for its sustainability efforts and environmental transparency. The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) 2010 S&P 500 report recognizes global companies making an effort to tackle climate change. In the report, Molson Coors was included in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, which is a key component of CDP’s annual S&P 500 Report, highlighting the companies within the S&P 500 Index that have displayed the most professional approach to corporate governance in respect of climate change disclosure practices. Molson Coors is the only global brewer to be recognized in the family of Carbon Disclosure Leadership Indices.

“The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index recognizes companies that demonstrate good internal data management practices for understanding greenhouse gas emissions, including energy use,” said Paul Dickinson, chief executive of the Carbon Disclosure Project. “Companies that make this index have also demonstrated clear consideration of how climate change is and will impact their business. As companies’ understanding of climate change issues grows, they are better placed to take positive action to manage and mitigate its risks.”

In addition to the CDP report, Newsweek released its 2010 Green Rankings and Molson Coors was ranked in the top 10 in the food and beverage sector at number seven and 160 overall out of the U.S. Top 500 companies.

“At Molson Coors, we wholeheartedly support the efforts of both CDP and Newsweek to measure and report on companies’ commitment to responsible environmental practices including carbon disclosure and sustainability. As a company whose products depend on the environment, Molson Coors has a vested interest in preserving and protecting our global resources,” said Bart Alexander, vice president, global alcohol policy and corporate responsibility for Molson Coors. “While we appreciate the recognition from the Carbon Disclosure Project and Newsweek, we know that we have a lot more to do and will continue to further improve on our practices and overall environmental stewardship.”

The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) on behalf of CDP, provides an evaluation tool for institutional investors. In 2010, it comprises 53 constituents of the S&P 500 Index based on analysis of the responses to CDP’s 2010 questionnaire which focused on greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets and risks and opportunities associated with climate change. Companies are scored on their climate change disclosure and high scores indicate good internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company.

The Newsweek ranking, the Green Score, is based on three components:

  • Environmental impact score: a comprehensive and standardized quantitative performance measurement that captures the total cost of all environmental impacts of a corporation’s global operations.
  • Green policies score: an analytical assessment of a company’s environmental policies and performance.
  • Reputation score: based on an opinion survey of corporate social responsibility professionals, academics and other environmental experts who subscribe to CorporateRegister.com as well as CEOs and high ranking officials in all companies on the Newsweek 500 list.
