New York's manufacturing job losses have continued over the past 12 months, according to the New York Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News Inc. MNI reports New York lost 22,310 manufacturing jobs and 121 plants since September 2005, prolonging the downward trend the state has experienced since 2001.
"Despite the recent surge in U.S. manufacturing, many New York companies are still trimming costs and jobs through technology and outsourcing," said MNI president Tom Dubin.
Manufacturers' News reports New York is now home to 19,629 manufacturing companies employing 853,794 workers compared to the 19,750 plants and 876,104 jobs reported a year earlier. MNI's survey profiles both large and small New York manufacturers, including startup companies with just a few employees.
MNI's regional study shows New York ranks sixth in the nation by number of manufacturing jobs, accounting for 4.5 percent of the nation's industrial employment. New York represents 30 percent of the mid-Atlantic's manufacturing companies and 28 percent of the region's jobs.
Printing and publishing remains New York's top industry, accounting for 16 percent of the state's manufacturers. Industrial machinery and equipment ranks second with 2,194 plants while metal fabricating ranks third with 1,888 plants.
New York's top industries by employment are photographic equipment and supplies with 27,864 jobs, newspapers, representing 25,053 jobs, and plastic products with 23,837 jobs.
According to the register, New York is home to 55 Fortune 500 companies including IBM and Eastman Kodak.
