EagleBurgmann lauded for diamond coating technology

RP news wires, Noria Corporation

The EagleBurgmann Group was honored with the prestigious Product Innovation of the Year Award for its diamond coating technology for mechanical seals. Frost & Sullivan, a U.S. research and consulting firm, gives its Best Practices Awards to companies represented in various regional and global markets. The awards go to these companies in recognition of their outstanding achievements in categories such as leadership, technological innovation, after-sales service and strategic product development.

The award for the best product innovation in 2008 went to EagleBurgmann in recognition if its development of DiamondFaces mechanical seals. The award winners in the “Technological Innovation” category are selected by analysts who conduct comparisons of both newly launched products and products in the development phase, using as criteria the respective degree of innovation involved and the opinions of users relating to their experiences and satisfaction with the products in question. The award is a major success for the internationally active EagleBurgmann Group, with 500 employees and more than 50 subsidiaries throughout the world, is among the leading manufacturers of industrial sealing systems for numerous industry sectors.

Technical details of DiamondFaces diamond coating
EagleBurgmann has introduced a revolutionary new diamond coating for mechanical seals, which offers excellent protection against wear during dry running, in applications with mixed friction and under exposure to abrasive media: this innovation is called DiamondFaces. The specially developed crystalline diamond coating offers the same advantages as natural diamonds, and is suitable for applications in the oil and gas industries (e.g. multi-phase pumps), slurry applications, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and domestic applications (hot water). The diamond coating on the seal face has a thickness of up to 14ụm. It is extremely hard, exceptionally long wearing, and features outstanding heat conductivity, excellent chemical resistance and low friction, thus enabling considerable savings in terms of energy, with optimal adhesion to the substrate being a decisive feature in this respect. Purchasers of this product say that the additional financial outlay pays for itself in a short period of time, since the diamond coated mechanical seals make for minimized wear and significantly longer service life.

EagleBurgmann’s DiamondFaces is a microcrystalline coating which is applied to the seal face using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The fundamental advantage here is the horizontal arrangement of the tungsten wires (which reach temperatures of 2,000 degrees Celsius) in a vacuum oven; coatings up to 14ụm can thus be applied, making for greater surface flatness which is vital for proper functioning of the mechanical seal. The crystalline diamond forms a chemical bond with the silicon carbide facing, and as a result the adhesion of the coating exceeds practical application requirements.
