Packaging audits can improve systems, reduce costs

RP news wires, Noria Corporation

Packaging systems and supplies are essential for most manufacturing and industrial operations, and should periodically be evaluated for possible efficiency improvements and cost reductions. Consider an audit or site survey conducted by a distributor knowledgeable about the range of packaging products available and the most advanced processes.

Curt Hustad, director of industrial packaging sales development for Network Services Company, an organization of independent distributors, notes that the process will require some time, but most distributors will conduct an audit at no cost. The audit will also make the distributor more helpful in the future.

“The distributor will better understand your business and its challenges,” says Hustad. “It will be better equipped to offer appropriate solutions, and know when a new product is something for you to consider.”

Hustad identifies some of the conditions and solutions that an audit can discover:

  • The quality of some of the packaging materials being used is inferior to what is available.
  • Product descriptions in the procurement system are old or lack sufficient information to properly describe the product.
  • Lower-cost products will accomplish the same results as the existing, more expensive products.
  • The amount of product going into the waste stream can be reduced.
  • Capital investments in automated equipment may provide a quick payback in reduced labor costs.
  • Different products will simplify and quicken the packaging process.
  • Changes in the order size and delivery schedule can lower inventory costs.
