SME foundation expands technology camp program

RP news wires, Noria Corporation
Dynamic opportunities for middle school students to learn more about career opportunities in manufacturing, engineering, science and technology at STEPS (Science, Technology & Engineering Preview Summer) camps are being expanded and accelerated by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation (SME-EF). Corporate funding has been provided by the Caterpillar Foundation, DaimlerChrysler Corporation and Ford Motor Company. In 2006, STEPS camps will be held at 12 schools in seven states.

STEPS was created in 1997 at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, a Malcolm Baldrige award-winning university, as part of a major effort to attract more women and minorities into the field of engineering early in their academic life.

Workshops taught by engineering and technology professors introduce campers to aeronautics, electronics, pneumatics and team building with curriculum including flying their own remote-controlled airplanes, building an autonomous robotic vehicle, or launching a rocket. Team-building activities include plant tours and pizza parties.

For information and applications on the 2006 STEPS camps, contact the individual schools or visit http://www.sme.org/foundation.
