GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GM Daewoo) celebrated on October 13 the production of its 10 millionth vehicle and the eighth anniversary of the company’s establishment.

If the 10 million vehicles were parked in a row, they would stretch about 40,000 kilometers, which is greater than the circumference of the earth.

GM Daewoo has been one of the world’s fastest-growing vehicle producers over the past eight years. Between October 17, 2002, when the company was established, and the end of September 2010, it produced 11,129,597 units, including 5,342,908 complete vehicles and 5,786,689 complete knockdown (CKD) kits for assembly outside Korea.

Joining GM Daewoo president and CEO Mike Arcamone and the company’s employees in the celebration of today’s milestones was Tim Lee, president of GM International Operations (GMIO). The ceremony to mark the 10 millionth vehicle off line was held at the assembly line in GM Daewoo’s Bupyeong plant in Incheon, Korea.

“The production of 10 million vehicles in just eight years shows GM Daewoo’s tremendous potential around the globe,” said Arcamone. “Our goal is to become an even stronger, more aggressive player in the domestic and global marketplace by launching seven new models next year and enacting positive change in every part of our business. We want to help GM design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles.

“We want to use this milestone to reach 20 million units in an even shorter period of time through outstanding performance and product quality. Our employees have a shared commitment to making necessary changes together,” he added.

“GM Daewoo has demonstrated time and again its world-class capability for designing, developing and building vehicles,” said Lee during the October 13 celebration. “GM Daewoo and its employees are doing an outstanding job adapting to the changing demands of GM and the global automotive industry.”

Lee added, “Since its establishment, GM Daewoo has been an important factor in the success of General Motors. It will maintain its fundamental role in the creation of new products as GM’s center for the development of our next generations of vehicles. In addition, GM Daewoo will help drive the global growth of Chevrolet, which is today one of the fastest-growing vehicle brands in the world.”

GM Daewoo has contributed greatly to the economic development of Korea as one of the nation’s fastest-growing automotive companies. Since its founding, GM Daewoo has created thousands of new jobs, developed many new products, made major investments in production and manufacturing, expanded its cutting-edge R&D, and enjoyed exemplary labor relations.

GM Daewoo has contributed to the domestic automotive industry’s competitiveness and development as well. It has helped more than 100 domestic parts suppliers enter the global market.

In addition, it has made corporate social responsibility a priority. The GM Daewoo Hanmaeum Foundation has supported many charitable organizations across Korea.
