EPA cites Illinois plant for alleged clean-air violations

RP news wires, Noria Corporation

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has cited MAPEI for alleged clean-air violations at the company's adhesive, cleaner and grout manufacturing plant at 530 Industrial Drive in West Chicago, Ill.

EPA alleges that MAPEI violated the Clean Air Act and state regulations by building new process units without getting state construction permits. The permits are needed to ensure that proper air pollution emission controls are in place and that regulations are followed. EPA said the alleged violations occurred over a 10-year period and continue to this day.

"EPA's mission is to protect public health and the environment," said EPA deputy regional administrator Bharat Mathur. "We will take whatever steps are needed to ensure compliance with the Clean Air Act."

These are preliminary findings of violations. To resolve them, EPA may issue a compliance order, assess an administrative penalty or bring suit against the company. MAPEI has 30 days from receipt of the notice to meet with EPA to discuss resolving the allegations.

Information about EPA Region 5's air enforcement program is at www.epa.gov/region5/air/enforce/index.html. Potential environmental violations may be reported at www.epa.gov/compliance/complaints.
