In response to the millions of dollars of production that companies lose in poorly planned shutdowns, the University of Kansas has launched a new certificate course, "The Basics of Shutdowns, Turnarounds and Outages."

This online class will address the basic issues of shutdowns and is designed for heavy maintenance environments including refineries, power plants, chemical plants, mines, large factories and other large facilities.

"Attendees will gain anew and deeper understanding of how to effectively manage large maintenance jobs such as power-plant outages and refinery refits," said Joel Levitt, course instructor and author of Managing Maintenance Shutdowns and Outages. "This will result in an increased ability to plan for and manage such projects."

The course will be delivered in three modules, beginning on Oct. 23, 2012. The live online webinar sessions meet on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. (Eastern Time). During the one-hour sessions, students will have the opportunity to interact with the instructor as he helps them evaluate and improve their current programs.

All sessions will be recorded, allowing students to watch them at a later time if one is missed. Quizzes and discussions will also be held online but can be done at any time that is convenient for the attendees.
