Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance recently announced that it has won five 2011 RoofPoint Excellence in Design Awards.

The RoofPoint program from the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing (Center) is a voluntary, consensus-based green rating system developed to help building owners and designers select non-residential roof systems based on long-term energy and environmental benefits. The Excellence in Design Awards were established as a way to recognize exceptional projects that meet RoofPoint’s mission and criteria. In the inaugural year for the awards, there were 10 categories, and more than 40 entries were submitted. Tremco projects won awards in four categories, as well as an honorable mention.

In the excellence in life cycle management category, Tremco earned the award for efficient re-use of original roofing materials at the Sam Nunn Federal Center in Atlanta, Ga.

Tremco’s winning entry in the excellence in innovation category was for its work at the College of Marin Fine Arts Building in Kentfield, Calif., which incorporated a green roof with native, drought-tolerant vegetation and a high R-value insulation system.

In the advancing sustainable roofing category, the company was honored for its renovation at the Tremco Incorporated headquarters in Beachwood, Ohio, with four sustainable roofing systems including a 9,000-square-foot vegetated roof with almost 16,000 plants and 46 species, a white reflective TPA membrane, an all-white built-up system with white gravel set in a white adhesive, and two rooftop photovoltaic installations for renewable energy.

Tremco’s award in the public sector leadership category was for projects installed on schools and municipal structures encompassing photovoltaic and vegetated integrated systems, learning stations, renovated historical structures and a Native American artifacts museum utilizing advanced day lighting and harvesting ceremonial natural vegetation from the construction site that was replanted on the vegetated roofing system.

The company also received an honorable mention in the global leadership category for projects such as a roof restoration using 1,000-year-old technologies at a Viking ship-rebuilding site in Newfoundland and Labrador, an LEED platinum new school in Ontario, and a corporate complex for a provincial utility (hydro-electric) in Manitoba that utilized active and passive heating combined with a highly insulated vegetated roof for energy conservation and sustainability.

"We want to congratulate everyone involved in these projects – our customers, professional clients, sales representatives, WTI associates and contractors," said Paul Mitchell, administrator of strategic initiatives and alliances for Tremco. "While the awards are a wonderful acknowledgement of their efforts, they are only possible because of the market’s growing understanding of the importance of sustainable building practices."
