Honeywell announced May 3 that its Specialty Materials business has sold its Arklow, Ireland, facility and operations to Sigma-Aldrich.

The facility manufactures active pharmaceutical ingredients and was the last remaining part of Honeywell's pharmaceutical business, which the company largely divested in 2002. The assets were classified as held for sale in Honeywell's first quarter financial statements. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Honeywell's Specialty Chemicals business continues to manufacture and supply high purity solvents and reagents under the Burdick & Jackson brand name, as well as inhalants, sterilants and intermediates, for the pharmaceutical, life sciences and biotechnology industries.

Sigma-Aldrich is a manufacturer of life science products used in genomic research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical development, and the diagnosis of disease and as key components in pharmaceutical and other high technology manufacturing.
