The EPA will recognize Johnson Controls for its PowerFrame Grid Technology, used for making the metal grids embodied in automotive batteries. The innovative grid manufacturing technology reduces pollutant emissions and consumes less energy than other similar processes. The technology also improves the quality and performance of automotive batteries, and improves plant safety. The PowerFrame Grid Technology process is used at all Johnson Controls manufacturing sites in the United States and will be implemented over the next several years at the company's battery production facilities in Mexico and Europe.
"Using technology and innovation to support sustainable manufacturing is an important part of how we do business," said Johnson Controls Power Solutions vice president and general manager Gregg Sherrill. "We are honored to receive this award from the EPA as we continue to invest in world-class processes that protect our environment."
The EPA selected 16 award recipients - individuals, teams and organizations - from more than 100 applicants around the world to receive the 2005 EPA Clean Air Excellence Award. Recipients were selected for demonstrating ingenuity, leadership and public purpose by achieving sustainable reductions of pollutants.
"This year's Clean Air Excellence Award winners showed us an impressive range of projects to improve air quality. We are honored to recognize them for their ability to create and implement effective projects and programs to reduce air pollution," said William L. Wehrum, acting assistant administrator, EPA Office of Air and Radiation.
