DOL grant to assist laid-off Freudenberg NOK, Skyjack workers in Iowa

RP news wires

The U.S. Department of Labor on August 23 announced the award of $737,608 under the National Emergency Grant program to assist approximately 100 workers affected by layoffs at Skyjack Inc. in Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Freudenberg NOK in Spencer, Iowa.

"Today's grant will help workers gain the skills needed to compete for and find jobs," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "These Iowans will receive the services needed to enter careers in promising industries. After all, only a new, good job can truly replace a job lost."

Awarded to Iowa Workforce Development, this grant will be operated by the Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission. The grant will provide dislocated workers, all of whom are also certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance, with access to "wrap-around" and supportive services, such as dependent care and transportation assistance.

Skyjack laid off workers between August 1, 2008, and December 1, 2009. Freudenberg laid off workers beginning on Jan. 1, 2010, with further layoffs expected to occur through October 2010.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG.
