The National Safety Council announced October 1 that Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) is the 2007 recipient of the Robert W. Campbell Award. Upon making the announcement, National Safety Council president and CEO Alan C. McMillan said, “BAPCO has successfully demonstrated that its safety, health and environmental programs are directly linked to its business performance, productivity and sustainability, and has therefore earned the distinction of being the National Safety Council’s 2007 international Robert W. Campbell Award recipient. It is clear that BAPCO’s senior management believes that extraordinary business performance starts with dedication and commitment to SH&E management, and has integrated that belief into every level of its business.”
BAPCO impressed the Campbell Award’s international expert review panel with the range of stringent audits and assessments the company regularly undertakes in order to maintain and exceed international standards. The panel also noted BAPCO’s corporate investment in SH&E management and the significant and positive impact these initiatives have had on the company’s overall business performance.
“BAPCO’s support of SH&E values extends across and beyond the company with a seamlessly integrated operation system oriented toward eliminating injuries, ill-health and environmental impact,” said Executive Director of Research and Statistical Services and Director of the Campbell Award Mei-Li Lin, Ph.D. “BAPCO’s integration of SH&E into their strategic planning, design, and daily operations has achieved remarkable results in the company’s financial outcomes and improved employee, community and environmental safety and health.”
BAPCO is one of the oldest and largest petroleum companies in the Middle East, and the largest employer in the
BAPCO devotes considerable resources to SH&E, with an annual budget of $20 million and a staff of 50 people working full-time on safety, health and environment activities. More than 60 percent of BAPCO employees are engaged in some form of corporate SH&E activity.

Campbell Award applicants undergo a rigorous assessment that includes site visits and a comprehensive evaluation of the company’s commitment to and implementation of SH&E practices. Panel assessments emphasize three key categories: involvement of management and corporate leadership; integration of SH&E systems into the overall business operations; and employee involvement, motivation and training.
Through the award’s outreach and educational efforts, its winners are acknowledged not only as international business leaders, but as corporate citizens who recognize the value of protecting employees, communities and the environment.
Recipients of the National Safety Council’s Robert W. Campbell Award work with a network of 21 global partner organizations to create a case study of their SH&E management systems for top business and engineering schools worldwide. Past Campbell Award winners include Noble Corporation, Johnson & Johnson, Alcan Inc. and DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations.
