The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has approved two new standards that will help reduce the risk of accident to people and properties when crane operations are involved.

In an effort to promote effective crane inspections worldwide as well as remove technical barriers to the international trade in cranes, ISO 23814:2009, Cranes – Competency requirements for crane inspectors, addresses personnel performing periodic and exceptional inspections of these devices.

Two other standards dictate the working and operational conditions that ensure the safety of cranes. ISO 9927-1:2009, Cranes – Inspections – Part 1: General, describes how to inspect a crane after its first use. A previous document, ISO 9927-3:2005, Cranes – Inspections – Part 3: Tower cranes, specifically addresses the regular inspections to be carried out on tower cranes.

ISO 9927-1:2009, ISO 9927-3:2005 and ISO 23814:2009 were developed by ISO Technical Committee (TC) 96, Cranes, Subcommittee (SC) 5, Use, operation and maintenance. The ANSI-accredited Technical Advisory Group (TAG) administrator to this TC is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
