Calpine Corporation on June 1 announced that its Morgan Energy Center power plant in Decatur, Ala., was designated as a Star worksite under the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The VPP Star certification is OSHA's highest level of recognition for outstanding efforts by an employer and its employees to achieve a level of excellence in occupational safety and health at their worksites. The Morgan Energy Center is a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plant. Using environmentally preferred and fuel-efficient technologies, the plant can generate more than 850 megawatts of electricity - enough power to supply nearly 850,000 U.S. households.

"We are very proud to have OSHA recognize the exemplary safety and health systems that Calpine has implemented at Morgan. This recognition is awarded to the 'best of the best' for outstanding safety performance and programs and is a tribute to the dedicated employees at Morgan and their unwavering commitment to safety," said Mike Gough, plant manager for Calpine's Morgan Energy Center. "Star certification helps reinforce Calpine's commitment to safety as a core value and to ensuring that each of our employees and sites continuously strives for excellence in producing safe, clean and reliable electricity."

Each OSHA VPP program is designed to promote effective worksite-based safety and health. Under VPP, management, labor and OSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system. OSHA's verification includes an application review and a rigorous onsite evaluation by a team of OSHA safety and health experts.

Calpine Corporation is helping meet the needs of an economy that demands more and cleaner sources of electricity. Founded in 1984, Calpine is a major North American power company, capable of delivering nearly 27,000 megawatts of clean, reliable and fuel-efficient electricity to customers and communities in 21 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.
